Introducing Adult Books(1)
While I adore young adult books, I also read a lot of adult books. I mainly read adult paranormal/urban fantasy titles. In fact, some of my favorite all time books are considered to be adult books.
Lately, I’ve been reading a lot more adult titles than usual. So, I thought to myself, “why not share your opinions of these books with your viewers?” You all come here for book recommendations, and I want to provide you with some of the best books that are out there. So, I have decided to introduce some adult titles every now and then. This is not a post that will occur every week. There will just be a random post every now and then that will share my opinions on some of the adult titles that I have currently read or that I have read in the past.
There will be no description of the books due to the fact that this is not a full review like you see for the young adult titles. There will simply be a paragraph or two that shares my own opinion. Let me know what you think of this post in the comments section below, as that will help me determine if it’s well received. Let’s get to it!
I cannot express how much I LOVE The Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. If I had to choose my favorite adult series, then this would probably be at the top of the list. I held off reading the Savannah books as long as possible, since the series is coming to an end, but I caved. I was not disappointed either.
This book was SO good! I literally read it in under 24 hours. Savannah’s character is so strong and independent. I was a little nervous about Savannah narrating the book, since she’s 12 years old at the beginning of the series. I didn’t know what it would be like reading about someone who I watched grow up. There was no need to be nervous, though, as she was brilliant. A great great GREAT book!

After I read Waking the Witch, I went out and got SpellBound from my local library. Again, I finished this book in under 24 hours. It was absolutely amazing. It wasn’t AS good as Waking the Witch, but it was very close. I loved how all of the characters got a role in the book. Since the series is coming to an end (something I am NOT happy about!), I was really thankful that Armstrong gave me some time with my other favorite characters from the series. Great book!

I am sure that many of you have already heard about or read this book. I read it because I wanted to know what all the drama was about. Public libraries are banning it, people are freaking out about it, and I wanted to form my own opinion about it.
First, I have to say that I am very sick of people freaking out because this book originally was a Twilight fanfiction sort of thing. While that may be the case, this book has NOTHING to do with vampires or Twilight. If you’re going to insult the book, then insult it with the actual information from the book.
Ok, I loved the first 100 pages of this book. As I’ve told many people, they were probably some of the best 100 pages I’ve ever read. It got kind of…..intense….after that. It was a little too much for me in some areas. I also had a huge problem with the character of Anastasia. I don’t do very well with such weak female characters, which made it a little difficult since she is the narrator.
I can’t imagine every having a relationship like the one between Christian and Anastasia. It’s just not my cup of tea. It was a pretty good read, though. I enjoyed it for the most part. I LOVED Christian. I don’t really know what that says about me, but I did. He was awesome. He’s the only reason I’m sticking through the series.

I just finished this book the other day. It took me awhile to get into it, as I wasn’t the biggest fan of the main character, but I eventually warmed up to it. I thought that there were a lot of interesting aspects to this story. It kept me entertained throughout the whole thing.
I didn’t like how the main character acted like a child. I wanted to remind her of her age multiple times. I also wasn’t a big fan on how her dad and uncle still treated her like she was sixteen. She DID warm up to me, though. By the end of the book, I really liked her. I liked her enough to put the second and third book on hold at my local library.

If you guys knew how many times I’ve read this series, you’d probably make fun of me for life. This is my favorite series by Nora Roberts. I can’t even express how brilliant they are. I’ve always been a huge fan of Nora Roberts thanks to my mom. I’ve read so many of her books that it’s not even funny.
Seriously, this is an amazing series. The only reason I’m giving it a 4 is because the fourth book is one of my favorite books ever. This is the first in the series. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

I think this is a great idea! I really want to read the Kelley Armstrong books because I loved her trilogy - Darkest Powers, I think?
But I have to disagree about Fifty Shades. No, it doesn’t reference vampires, but it uses all the characters and relationships from Twilight. I’ve read both, and nothing’s changed between the fan fic and the book. It’s lazy and disappointing, frankly.
Having said that, it’s an alright book - not one I’d pay for, but I got it from the library and enjoyed it enough.
After I created this post a couple days ago, I actually talked to a friend about Fifty Shades. It was interesting because they were the first person to get me to see the similarities between Twilight and Fifty. I have a hard time seeing all of the characters and relationships that you mention. However, I do see the Bella/Edward quality.I do not think the characters in Twilight are as intense as the characters in Fifty, though.
I wish that I could see the original fanfiction. I can’t help but wonder if that information hadn’t been leaked, if people would still see the similarities between Twilight and Fifty.
The books are seriously just so interesting to me. They have caused so much drama that I’m just in a state where I’m exploring what people are thinking.
Yeah, it would be interesting to see if that is why people see the similarities. It’s just that it’s about a clumsy, blush-prone girl who, when her mother remarried, went to live with the father figure in her life. She works in a hardware store, the owners’ son fancies her. Christian’s crazy rich and lavishes material gifts on her, and he’s obsessed with her safety and eating habits. Like I said, I sort of enjoyed it, and I respect your opinion, I just think it’s a bit dodgy.
It kind of surprised me when a friend came into work and said she’d assumed I’d read it because it seemed like my sort of book - I wonder what gave her that impression!
You can still read the first few pages here: http://www.wattpad.com/1114636-master-of-the-universe-by-snowqueensicedragon#!p=2
Wow..I see it more when you put it that way. I never really broke it down like that. Now it’s going to be really difficult to finish the second book lol!
Hahaha! I don’t know what I’d think or say if someone said that to me. I wonder if she’d already read it and knew what it was about, or had just heard a little bit about it. When I first bought the book, I asked my friend if she had read it and she about jumped down my throat. I figured out why once I started it lol.
Wow. I skimmed that link. I couldn’t do it. I had to stop. It was way too weird. I find it a little awkward that this started as a twilight fanfiction. It’s really uncomfortable actually reading it lol.
Ahaha, sorry! Yeah, it’s a pretty weird - I’m worried to watch the film or read Twilight now without thinking of Fifty Shades :S
Haha I don’t think it’s going to affect me with Twilight. I could be wrong, though. I hope I’m not! But I think it’s really going to bother me when the movie comes out and while reading the rest of the series lol. If I can even manage to get through them. I REALLY dislike Anastasia!
The movie might be weird - not one to watch with parents, for sure!
Yeah, she’s kind of… pathetic is probably the best word
I REALLY want to read Kelley’s adult series since I do love her YA stuff. I think it will definitely be the next adult series I read, after I finish the one I’m reading and get to some more review books first. =b
Kelley’s adult series is one of the best series out there. You definitely should read them! Be warned, though, the first 100 or so pages of the first book are a litttttttttle slow. Push through them and you’ll fall in love!
I find it interesting how much drama Fifty Shades has caused. I read it to see what the fuss was about, and found the book (particularly the ‘shocking’ parts) extremely repetitive and often boring. The majority of adult romance and PNR is way better written and sexier than this.
I expected it to be really extreme & for me to be horrified, but it was very Bella and Edward. It must be to do with the ending of the first book, which made me really uncomfortable. And I HATED Anastasia - I should probably see Christian as a woman beating weirdo, I actually liked him more than her; at least he had the guts to be upfront about his needs, while she spends the whole book yo-yoing between swooning over him and despising him!
I actually started Bitten about two years ago and never finished it, as I found it really slow, but after your recommendation I may dig it out again
However I hated Kelley Armstrong’s YA stuff, is it similar in terms of writing style?
Maggie,
I agree with everything you said about Fifty Shades. It’s definitely interesting how much drama it’s caused. There are WAYYYY worse books out there, so why is this one getting targeted? Because it’s so popular? It’s really not that great of a book. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good book. But if you’re looking for romance, I can recommend much better books. I’ve read romance books that I could reread 50 more times. I probably won’t read these ones again, unless I need a Christian fix…cause I loved him.
I also hated Anastasia. I couldn’t STAND her! She whined throughout the WHOLE book.
Bitten is really boring for more than half of the book. I remember when I had my mom read it, and I had to FORCE her to continue it because the first half was that bad. It’s good the second half, but not brilliant. It really picks up in book 2. There are so many different characters, with their own unique personalities, that I think you should give them a shot.
I actually love Kelley’s YA works….well..her darkest powers series. The Gathering and The Calling were just alright. I didn’t think they were similar, though. For one, they target two completely different audiences. The YA books have teenagers while the Adult books are just that, adults. That makes a HUGE difference! So, to answer your question, I do not believe the writing styles are similar. Give them a shot and let me know what you think!
