Uglies Movie

Fans of the popular Scott Westerfeld book, Uglies, may have heard that the book is being made into a movie. Westerfeld updated his blog recently with some exciting news for his fans regarding movie progress:

Uglies is currently optioned to be a movie, or possibly a series of movies if the first one does well. To “option” a book is Hollywood-speak for buying the exclusive right to make a movie based on it. But the buyers don’t have to make a movie. Most options never go anywhere, in fact. But it certainly means that these producers are interested.

(What happens if this group doesn’t make the film(s)? In a couple of years I have the right option the book to someone else. In other words, options have time limits.)

Where are we now? Well, there’s no script, director, or actors lined up yet. So be patient and stop asking me about casting! If there are open auditions, you’ll see it here first.

So this phone call was mostly us getting to know each other and talking about what makes Uglies special to us. Most of the conversation was me talking, which was interesting. Sometimes Hollywood folks seem compelled to tell me all about my books. But these folks listened. And when I told them about , they were my previous post, dying to shoot over and read your comments. So keep them coming!

Here are some of the things I told them:

Most of you guys want unknown actors for Tally and Shay, but maybe someone famous for Dr. Cable. The producers get that, and they also understand how important casting is, given that you could break the whole theme of the film by putting the World’s Most Beautiful Actress in the starring role.

I also told them how important setting is to you guys. How the world-building, tech hoverboards, etc., have to be real. This movie should look good, and more importantly, it should look right. Excellently, it turns out that one of the producers has read Bogus to Bubbly. She also sends it along to the screenwriters they’ve been approaching. That is a Good Thing.

I told them you guys want a faithful adaptation, and they said definitely, because, as one of them put it, “The book is a movie already.” In other words, the story doesn’t have to get completely reshaped to fit the screen. (I doubt there will be any of this putting-all-three-books-into-one-movie crap.)

So what are the chances of the movie happening soon? Well, movies cost tens of millions of dollars, and nothing that requires that much money plus human creativity is ever easy to predict. But the producers did say that there’s lots of support for this project at their studio, where certain execs have been known to speak in bubble-talk. This seems like a very good sign to me.

Anyway, that’s everything I know. Watch this space for further developments. So you can stop asking me about casting calls. Seriously.

(Oh, and if you’re one of the producers reading this, don’t worry, I won’t blog every darn thing you say to me. It’s just that a lot of fans have been asking about this for a long time, and I figured it was time to give them a major update. Normally I am a master of discretion, and will only twitter what you say to me.)

  • sounds promising. hope they make the movie and not put in on the shelf. btw: i like your new blog layout. love the pink.

  • Thank you for the update! I can’t wait till they make the movie :)

  • I have a passion for acting, although i never aditioned for a actual movie, but i have been in school plays getting lead roles. I would love to audition and get the part for atleast the major role or semi major role. It would make my world amazing.

  • I love these books. they are amazing. and always thought they would make a great movie. Home they pick the right people and make it good.. should be an interesting turn out.

  • this sounds soooo cool!!! i love the books and i really hope they dont screw up the movie!!

  • Yes Yes Yes finally i love all of your books but please do not use famous actors or anything that will screw it up and by the way i think this movie will be as good if not better then twilight (sorry twilight).

  • Yea more time to talk okay i think that if your going to make the movie it should have awsome speacial affects like the hover board and the floating houses etc. I have all of the buildings and every detail planned out in my head sooooo please PLEASE have DETAIL the movie wont be any good if their is no detail so USE DETAIL. If you have to make the producers read the book 4 times lol. Oh and please save all the viewers time and dont use famous people in the movie. Tally Shay and David should all be UGLY dont use georgous actors for thier parts. If you use any or all of these tips i think the movie will be a great sucess!

  • omg! i cant wait for the movie to come out, hopefully by the end of 2010 would be awesome! but i know thats not really realistic. I love these books and their very detail-oriented, so if you miss one little thing, it can throw it off. Another thing, I think the ugly actors should’nt have makeup, or have their hair done for scenes. It should be all natural, and unpolished. So then the pretties have crazy amounts of makeup and long hours of hairstyling to really emphasize the difference between them and the uglies.

  • After a quick search in the websites I found out that if you want to have an audition you should have an agent. If an agent is the only way to take part in the audition, can you help me?
Do you know where I can found one. I am an actress already in my country and I would like to to go beyond. Please tell me what I can do…

  • My brother has an acting agent, and I’m hoping to audition for one soon as well. Agents should not be taken lightly, however. If you do not live near NYC (which luckily I do) or LA, you would have to fly in for auditions (so you would only do big auditions). There are a lot of people who do this. However, you have to be really good at acting to get an agent. Take a few acting classes. Then give it a go! You never know, right? But be sure to look up the agencies before you audition. If they ask you for money, THEY ARE FAKE, no matter what they say. Real agents will never ask for money unless you book a job. If they do, they are a scam. Good luck!

  • i wish they would come to windsor or somewhere close in canada for auditions because i know alot of talented people who would be perfect for a part in the movie but in windsor theres no agents 😐

  • I hope they hurry up i really want to see the movie!!!

  • Soooooo cool! I can’t wait! YAY! I♥Uglies! HAHAHAHA! :)

  • wow I really would love to audition, shall get myself an angent if open auds news doesnt come through :)

  • Anyone know if there’s going to be an “Extras” movie? I would really love to audition for Aya..since..well, I’m japanese. I know that it’s a really long way away but, you can never be too prepared! :) Thank you!

  • The wait for this book to become a movie will be excruciating, but in the end I’m shore it will all be worth it. My BIG hope to come out of the movie, would be for hover boards to be produced and become something that would get sold on the market! If the movie dos come out I’m shore my dream of hover boards will come, for there will be a popular demand for them after ppl have seen what they would be like. All though I shore do hope that are government/others wouldn’t wana try and make us all Babble heads after they see how it could be done! Lol! Jk!
    Waiting for the Movie……………………

  • I cannot wait! I love that book! I’m going to buy the rest of the series the next time I go to the bookstore! I’ll probably watch at the premiere! I really hope this idea doesn’t get canceled!

  • can i direct hahahahaha

  • i have read the books through and through and i practically consider myself as being tally. i’ve been in a few school plays/musicals and starred in some of them and i love to act. i also think it would be perfect to have the “uglies” actors to not wear makeup when they’re uglies and to have tons of makeup to make them look perfect. i would really love having the part of tally also because its the star of the show

  • Wow, good luck with some of those expectations!

…Just want to say that I am a fan and am looking forward to this movie.

  • iDream Big!!! Soooooo,
I would LOVE to ACT iN this Movie although i hardly done any acting at all…. iThink it would be Fun, and Exciting!!! =D !

  • iDream Biqq Soooooo
I would LOVE to Act in this Movie although i’ve N’VER done anything like acting ,but im working very hard & im PRETTY good… =D

  • i advise producers to use some willing fans (such as me) as the actors. and this movie would definitely be SOOO much better than the twilight saga. that obsession is getting SOOO old!!!

  • I would like to audition when casting calls go out for any guy part that would be fit for an African American male 651-434-0671

  • Can’t wait for this movie to come out. Oh by the way the ” Ranger’s Apprentice” is also becoming a movie! If you haven’t read the series yet I think you should Its great!

  • I really hope they make this a move. I’ve read all the books and thought they were awesome! My friend and u both wanna be in this movie. I wanna play Tally cuz I think it’d be really cool to play a role of a person who shares my name(just with different spellings) I know this movies gonna be awesome!!!!!

  • OMG I LOVE THESE BOOKS! It would be an amazing movie!!! I would love to audition for Tally’s part, because from her describtion in the book, I would look a ton like her. I’ve read this book more time than I can count and I can quote random things out of the book. Except I’m only 14, but by the time they get it adapted and have auditions ready, I’d probably be 15 or 16. So lets cross out fingers and hope we get our Uglies movie!

  • Hmmm i thought this already was a movie atleast it felt like it in my head. I love this series and i’m really excited to see if making it a movie really happens. I have been in drama camp, but I know i’ll never be able to get a part. So i’m just really excited for this to become a movie. Good luck!

  • i always imagined the uglies looking like normal people and that the pretties were all plastic i mean they could have normal people playing them that aren’t necisarrily ugly because the uglies were just brainwashed into thinking they were ugly so there wouldnt really be a need for ugly people to play david or tally or anyone the pretties and the specials arre the only ones that would need to get work done

  • I am so anxious to see the movie. I’m still reading Specials and I love the series! Scott Westerfeld is an amazing author. When I’m reading the books, I kind of see myself in Tally and I can relate to her in some ways. She helped me look at the world in a different perspective. I’m sure the movie will be just as bubbly as the books! I can’t wait.

  • if they do audition they need to hold auditions in nashville. tn

  • are there open auditions any time soon?
