Spirit Bound: A Vampire Academy Novel

Dimitri gave Rose the ultimate choice. But she chose wrong…

After a long and heartbreaking journey to Dimitri’s birthplace in Siberia, Rose Hathaway has finally returned to St. Vladimir’s-and to her best friend, Lissa. It is nearly graduation, and the girls can’t wait for their real lives beyond the Academy’s iron gates to begin. But Rose’s heart still aches for Dimitri, and she knows he’s out there, somewhere.

She failed to kill him when she had the chance. And now her worst fears are about to come true. Dimitri has tasted her blood, and now he is hunting her. And this time he won’t rest until Rose joins him… forever.

That blurb would have you believe that Rose’s whole existence is still completely centered on Dimitri, but that’s the funny thing about blurbs – sometimes, they can be a little misleading. When Sprit Bound kicks off, readers find Rose romantically engaged with Adrian. She tells everyone she’s accepted the fact that Dimitri – her instructor and one time lover – is eternally an evil, blood-sucking Strigoi, and she’s now trying to move on with her life. With Adrian, it seems.

It’s pretty clear that Adrian is completely head over heals for Rose, but are those feelings reciprocated? Rose likes Adrian, sure, but does she have it in her to love him? Is it even possible to love again, after Dimitri? I’ve never really been a an of Adrian, but my heart goes out to the kid. The inequality in their relationship is more than a little obvious.

Adrian is no fool, he sees the holes, and he hates every moment of it. So when he finds out that Rose and her friends are embarking on a dangerous mission that might restore Dimitri to his former dhampir self, Adrian is anything but impressed.

Rose isn’t even sure it can be done, but she has to at least try. The mission is dangerous as all hell, and involves dealing with a certain criminal that she’d prefer never to see again in her life, but that doesn’t stop Rose. Even when she realizes that its going to put her friends and loved ones in danger, Rose refuses to stop.

But Rose, it seems, hasn’t really thought this through. What if she does get Dimitri back from eternal damnation, what then? She’s involved with another boy now and her life isn’t the same as it was four months ago.

But worse, what if she can’t get him back? Would she really risk her friends and everything they’ve worked for, all for nothing? Is Rose really that selfish?

If you want the answers, you’re just going to have to read it for yourself.

Although a little slow on the uptake, Spirit Bound does not disappoint. The Rose Hathaway that Vampire Academy fans have come to know and love is spread across the pages for all to see. Her dedication and loyalty to those she loves drives the story forward, while her feisty, take-no-crap attitude provides for an entertaining read. Full of drama, romance, adventure and action, Spirit Bound has it all. Something tells me the fans are going to lose it over this one.

Rating: ★★★★☆

Teaser Quote: And then, being Rose Hathaway, I said something I really shouldn’t have to the boy. “You should go punch him and find out.”

  • as always, you’re review is great Nikki :)
I just wanna say this is my second fav book in the series, just after SK.
It has it all! and as always leaves us wanting so much more! Richelle Mead is amazing!

  • I absolutely love this series, but I some things really irritated me in this one. I just felt like Rose was so much more mature in BP, and after she was so obsessive about Dimitri in the last one it was so weird to start it and see her being so blasé about the whole thing.

And I completely agree about Adrian – I never really liked him that much, but here I just felt so sorry for him. And Rose just kept leading him on, it made her look awful. But the ending was eye-poppingly brilliant, Richelle Mead never fails on the cliffhanger front. :L

  • Niza is right. This book has it all. I laughed, I cried, & I even threw the book against the wall. I do feel sorry for Adrian, but my feelings are like Rose’s. I like Adrian, but I can’t get myself to stop liking Dimitri.

I loved the book, though I’m undecided about the ending. I liked it, but I hated that it was a cliff hanger. :/

  • I love the series… Very unique… Can’t wait to finish the fifth book.

  • no offense but I like Adrian than Dimitri… I like him because he has good sense of humor… He’s really in love with Rose and he’ll do everything for her which is AMAZING. TEAM ADRIAN IVASHKOV

  • yay! Katty joins us in our Adrian fan club! :)

i cnt belive that adrian is so hot and dimitri to. i find my self turning more into rose. and i have the same guy problems she does.! some what

  • aw.. The fourth book is a cliff hanger! it’s getting more and more exciting now that rose was being accused to something didn’t do
I’m loving the presence of Abe whose always turns out of nowhere whenever her daughter is in trouble.. I wish he appear in the first books though.
I wanted dimitri dead on the next book (evil grin).

    team adrian!!

  • This book deserves five stars, nothing less. I wasn’t too found of the ending, but as usual, Richelle Mead created a beautiful masterpiece. Her writing never fails to amaze me.

  • Awww I wanted to read it so badly… Poor me, I still haven’t bought Spirit Bound yet. But one thing remains the same, Adrian is my bet! No offense just love him so much.

  • *SPOILER,SPOILER*

My sister read it and said that dimitri comes back to normal but doesnt want to talk to rose for what he did and it ends with someone framing rose for killing the queen they come for her and put her in the cage they stuck dimitri in and take her away but dimitri wont allow it and he gets ready to fight the warriors until rose says no.

  • So, another awesome blog, Nikki.:p.
Anyways,I really loved this book,Richelle Mead did an awesome job.
I actually do feel like Rose was leading Adrian on,but she probably did have an ounce of feelings for him.I personally love Adrian, and I hope Richelle won’t kill him off in the next book. But what will Rose do with him now that Dimitri is alive and well? Ahh, poor Dimitri and Rose, will they ever be together.
I can’t wait till the book comes out, regards.
    -Yasmin.

  • OMG i havent read it yet but it seems freaking awesome! :) :) :) :)

  • That’s right Miranda! VA Series sure rocks! ^^

  • I LOVE THE VAMPIRE ACADAMEY SERIES!!! AND AT THE MOMMENT I AM READING BLOOD PROMISE AND I CAN’T WAIT TO READ SPIRIT BOUND! I LOVE ALL THE CHARICTERS IN IT. I THINK RICHELLE MEAD HAS DONE A REALLY GOOD JOB!

  • The storyline is exactly d same. and at last, Rose is accused of Queen tatiana’s murder. i cant wait for the last part. pray dat rose is not convicted of murder. i dont want her 2 die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • First off I want to say that I really love this series. I enjoyed the progressive relationship Rose and Dimitri have, and how the characters seemed to grow. But this book, was horrible. First off, I can not understand how Rose is with Adrian! In all the previous books he showed up in, I never would of actually thought they would actually end up together. Especially not after all the undying love Rose keeps saying she has for Dimitri. I mean, not even Lisa ended up with another guy. And i really hate that she let Adrian bite her..ugh. She’s always said that its something very low to do and yet…whatever. I never thought of Rose as weak and ‘i need a boyfriend type’ but after this book..

  • dont mean to dis on the book but it couldnt keep my attention it really bord me maybe my standers were to high for the follow up but it did start out good dont get me wronge it just got boring after a coudle of chapters to me plez dont hate
