Some secrets are best kept hidden…

Anastasia Phoenix has always been the odd girl out, whether moving from city to international city with her scientist parents or being the black belt who speaks four languages.

And most definitely as the orphan whose sister is missing, presumed dead.

She’s the only one who believes Keira is still alive, and when new evidence surfaces, Anastasia sets out to follow the trail—and lands in the middle of a massive conspiracy. Now she isn’t sure who she can trust. At her side is Marcus, the bad boy with a sexy accent who’s as secretive as she is. He may have followed her to Rome to help, but something about him seems too good to be true.

Nothing is as it appears, and when everything she’s ever known is revealed to be a lie, Anastasia has to believe in one impossibility.

She will find her sister.

Diana Rodriguez Wallach is not the child of super spies, as far as she knows. But she is an avid traveler, and every scene in her books comes from a place she has lived or visited—from her senior year apartment in Boston, MA to the hotel where she stayed in Cortona, Italy. In addition to the Anastasia Phoenix series, Diana is also the author of the award-winning Amor and Summer Secrets series; the Mirror, Mirror short story collection; and essays in both Dear Bully: 70 Authors Tell Their Stories and Latina Authors and Their Muses. She is an advisory board member for the Philly Spells Writing Center, and is a Creative Writing Instructor for Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth. She holds a B.S. in Journalism from Boston University, and currently lives in Philadelphia with her husband and two kids. But of course, this all could be a masterly crafted piece of disinformation…

Can you tell us about your book, Proof of Lies, in 45 words or less?

PROOF OF LIES is an international thriller, based on true historical events, that mixes espionage with mysterious family drama. Anastasia Phoenix is 17-year-old orphan whose sister is missing and presumed dead. Anastasia is the only one who believes Keira is alive, and her quest to find answers lands her in a massive conspiracy.

What was your favorite scene to write?

PROOF OF LIES is an international thriller, based on true historical events, that mixes espionage with mysterious family drama. Anastasia Phoenix is 17-year-old orphan whose sister is missing and presumed dead. Anastasia is the only one who believes Keira is alive, and her quest to find answers lands her in a massive conspiracy.

What was the hardest scene to edit out?

Honestly, I edited out enough to fill another entire book. I’ve been working on PROOF OF LIES for seven years, and during that time, the novel changed dramatically. Characters that I onced killed off, now live. Characters that once had ulterior motives are now purely good. Fight scenes were cut, a love triangle was snipped, and lot of espionage clues and elements were deleted–all to streamline the plot and make my characters’ motivations clearer. Overall, the story I wanted to tell has remained the same, it just took me a long time, and a lot of editing, to figure out how I wanted to tell that story.

What theme song would you give to Proof of Lies?

I have an entire playlist! And it’s even on Youtube: http://dianarodriguezwallach.com/wp/proof-of-lies-playlist/. But if I had to pick just one song, it would be U2’s “One.” Lyrics from the song were the epigraph to the book for a long time, so it still holds a special place in my heart.

How many books will be in this series?

Three! So I guess it’s really a trilogy more than a series. Book Two, Lies that Bind, comes out in March 2018. And Book Three will be out in March 2019. I’m currently writing Book Three now, and I know I’m going to be sad to see Anastasia go.

What else are you currently working on?

I’m currently marketing PROOF OF LIES, editing Books Two, and writing Book Three. Whew! I’m busy. I’m also working on a draft of a children’s picture book that’s still very much in the early stages.

What is the best book you’ve read recently?

I absolutely loved A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis and The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma. Both are dark psychological YA thrillers that kept me hooked not only by the plotlines, but also the gorgeous writing. I could read them again and again.

What is currently in your TBR pile?

My TBR pile usually depends on what I’m writing. If I’m writing a mystery, I read YA mysteries. If I’m writing a contemporary romance, I read romances. The lists are long. But I’ve also given my main character, Anastasia Phoenix, a TBR pile and list the books I think she’d read is on my Tumblr page: http://dianarwallach.tumblr.com. So far Anastasia’s TBR pile includes: The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, The Fixer by Jennifer Lynn Barnes; Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver; and 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher; among others.
