What if your last kiss was with the wrong boy?
Cassidy Haines remembers her first kiss vividly. It was on the old covered bridge the summer before her freshman year with her boyfriend of three years, Ethan Keys. But her last kiss–the one she shared with someone at her seventeenth birthday party the night she died–is a blur. Cassidy is trapped in the living world, not only mourning the loss of her human body, but left with the grim suspicion that her untimely death wasn’t a suicide as everyone assumes. She can’t remember anything from the weeks leading up to her birthday and she’s worried that she may have betrayed her boyfriend.
If Cassidy is to uncover the truth about that fateful night and make amends with the only boy she’ll ever love, she must face her past and all the decisions she made–good and bad–that led to her last kiss.
Bethany Neal’s suspenseful debut novel is about the power of first love and the haunting lies that threaten to tear it apart
Easter Egg Hunt
Despite what that half-eaten chocolate bunny on my desk might say, it’s a little late for Easter references, I know, but an Easter egg in this context is actually a film term. It refers to any set piece, cameo, or line of dialogue with hidden meaning that a viewer might not recognize unless they either know the story at a fangirl/boy level or they’ve listened to the director’s DVD commentary.
Now, for the first time ever, I am uncovering the hidden gems in My Last Kiss!
Easter Egg #1
Most of the main characters’ names come from band members of Metric. Metric’s song ‘Help, I’m Alive’ inspired the idea for My Last Kiss, so when it came time to name my characters, I wanted to include them by using their first and/or last names in the text.
Easter Egg #2
Madison’s house is green for a reason. Cassidy’s bestie Madison has a lot of jealousy in her heart, so I made a deliberate effort to surround her with the color of envy and jealousy. That’s also why her car is teal.
Easter Egg #3
Gossip-happy party-goer (featured in the chapter titled Breakup) Carly is named after Carly in Anna Jarzab’s novel All Unquiet Things. My Carly has nothing in common with AUT’s Carly Ribelli except for her name, but it’s an homage to Anna’s beautifully broken character.
Easter Egg #4
I named Cassidy’s boyfriend Ethan just so his friends could call him E. Maybe I was watching too much Entourageat the time, but I adore that single-syllable nickname.
Easter Egg #5
Cassidy’s middle school teacher Mr. Scarsoonie (mentioned in the chapter titled Schnapps) is based on my 7th grade social studies teacher. He really did whistle his S’s.
Easter Egg #6
In Chapter 13, the Beatles song that Ethan plays for Cassidy and tells her he learned a slow dance to is ‘If I Fell’. The lyrics are so him and how he loves.
Easter Egg #7
In chapter 11, the big heat register that Madison sits on top of while talking to Aimee is based on the one in the school bathroom on the short-lived but much-loved Claire Danes/Jared Leto 1994-95 TV show My So-Called Life. Do yourself a favor and Netflix the series.
Easter Egg #8
Cassidy’s younger sister Joules is a figure skater because I am one too! (Joules is also one of the characters named after a Metric band member.)
