IMG_6603_print copyThis month we are hosting NOT A DROP TO DRINK by Mindy McGinnis as our Book of the Month. I LOVED this book so much, and I am so excited to have Mindy on the site! Read below for an interview with Mindy McGinnis. And don’t forget to enter the giveaway below!

I’m a YA librarian and author, represented by Adriann Ranta of Wolf Literary. My YA debut, NOT A DROP TO DRINK, is a survival tale set in a world with limited fresh water. It will be available from Katherine Tegen / Harper Collins, September 24, 2013.

I’m an avid blogger, posting six days a week to my personal blog, Writer, Writer Pants on Fire, which features interviews with agents, established authors, and debut authors. Learn how they landed their agents, what the submission process is really like, and how it feels when you see your cover for the first time. I also do query critiques every Saturday on the Saturday Slash for those who are brave enough to volunteer.

I also contribute to the group blogs From the Write Angle, Book Pregnant, Friday the Thirteeners, The Lucky 13s, The League of Extraordinary Writers and am a member of the Class of 2k13.

Favorite TV show? Right now, Breaking Bad. I’m going to miss it.

Celebrity Crush? I don’t really do celebrity crushes. In order to be attracted to someone I have to like their personality, and I don’t think you can really know a celebrity just by watching all their movies / interviews.

Cats or Dogs? Cats, but I do love my dog dogs too.

Summer or Winter? Fall!

Favorite Dessert? I’m a donut person.

Best compliment you’ve received for Not a Drop to Drink? My favorite one line review so far has been “This book… my heart!”

Ebook or Hardcopy? I’m tactile. I want to hold a book.

Can you tell us about your book, NOT A DROP TO DRINK, in 10 words or less? A post-apoc survival story in a world with little water.

What was your favorite scene to write? Anything with the character of Stebbs in it. He would walk into any scene and take control making the other characters react to him, which made it very easy to write.

I’m assuming that NOT A DROP TO DRINK is going to be a standalone? There are no cliffhangers in DRINK, all the plot 13112869lines are tied off. So, yes, this book begins and ends Lynn’s story.

Are you currently working on anything else? This summer I signed another two book deal with Katherine Tegen Books for 2015 and 2016 releases. They’re both fairly research heavy, so I’ve been doing a lot of reading on nefarious topics lately.

The ending of this book blew. my. mind. I think that my mouth was hanging open for like the last 3 chapters. What made you take the route you did? Most of the time when I’m writing I just write. I don’t plot, or outline. I let the story tell itself and I don’t try to control it. When the end came about I knew something bad was going to happen, but I didn’t know what. Then it happened and I thought, “Oh man… that was tough stuff.”

Were you looking for a more realistic approach? That comes into it, too. After it was written I knew it was how it should be though. I never considered changing it.

Was it difficult for you to kill of a character that you were so connected to? Not really, and that’s where the realism comes in. This is a harsh world… somebody had to go.

I could totally see Not a Drop to Drink as a movie. Have their been any nibbles? Not yet!

If you could choose any actor to star as some of the main characters, who would you choose? Nobody. I don’t actually see my characters or cast them in my the way a lot of people do. It’s just not how I operate. If you notice, I usually don’t even describe them much. I want my readers to picture them however they see them.

What is the best book that you’ve read recently? ANOTHER LITTLE PIECE by Kate Karyus Quinn and CHARM & STRANGE by Steph Kuehn are both amazing.

What 2014 debut are you most looking forward to? My crit partner’s debut! STITCHING SNOW by RC Lewis!! I’ve read it already, of course, but it’s awesome and I can’t wait to hold it!!

What is currently in your TBR pile? What isn’t? My TBR pile is currently about 40 books deep. Um… at the top right now is ANTIGODDESS by Kendare Blake and BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA by April Tucholke.
