Heart Breaths Blog Tour: Interview with KK Hendin

KK Hendin’s real life ambition is to become a pink fluffy unicorn who dances with rainbows. But the schooling for that is all sorts of complicated, so until that gets sorted out, she’ll just write. Preferably things with angst and love. And things that require chocolate.
She spends way too much time on Twitter, and rambles on occasion over atwww.kkhendinwrites.blogspot.com.

Batman or Buffy?

I never really watched either of them, so I have no opinion

Cats or Dogs?

Mexico or the Bahamas?

Drink of Choice?

Alcoholic? Sangria. Non-Alcoholic? A tie between green lemonade and chocolate milk. (But not together, because EW.)

Favorite Celebrity Couple?

 I don’t really have any.

Favorite TV Show?

I don’t really watch TV, but The Sing Off was on again and that made my nerdy a capella heart so freakin’ happy.

Favorite Series of All Time?

A tie between Harry Potter and Series of Unfortunate Events.

Can you tell us about your book, Heart Breaths, in 15 words or less?

It’s the story of moving on, forgiving your past, and learning to love again.

Why did you decide to write a New Adult book?

I didn’t decide to as much as I had characters with a story to tell who were in the prescribed ‘New Adult’ age range and were faced with a lot of problems most people are at that point in their life: the struggle between adult and child, getting thrust into responsibilities they aren’t necessarily ready for, and trying to figure out who they are as an individual and not in the context of anyone else.

What was your favorite scene to write?

The confrontation scene at the end, I think.

What was the hardest scene to edit out?

I didn’t actually edit out so many scenes- I rewrote a whole bunch, though, and moved some around. There was a pretty big plot point that changed, so I guess editing that was pretty hard- it involved going through the entire manuscript with a fine-toothed comb to make sure I fixedunnamed any references I found.

What is one of your favorite quotes from Heart Breaths?

I have a bunch, but one that really kind of captures Sam and Maddie’s friendship is this part:

“New plan for this summer,” Sam teased, reaching over and swatting at me gently. “Get Maddie drunk enough to pull the stick out of her ass.”

I burst into laughter. Should I have been offended? Maybe. But Sam’s honesty was a welcome change from the fake cheerfulness of the dumb debutantes that I had been forced into spending time with before. And there was a stick up my ass.

I love that cover! Who designed it?

Thank you! I love the cover, too. It was designed by the incredible Hafsah over at Icey Designs.

Is this a standalone or will it be a series?

It’s a standalone.

What is the best book you’ve read recently?

*hides from impossible questions* Recently, I’ve read and adored WHY WE BROKE UP by Daniel Handler, THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE by Jandy Nelson, and THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE by Leila Sales, and highly recommend all of them.

What is currently in your TBR pile?

Oh God, everything. (Seriously.) Books that are already out and I haven’t had a chance to read yet? VICIOUS by Victoria Schwab, WHERE THE STARS STILL SHINE by Trish Doller, The PERSOPOLIS series, BLACKBIRDS by Chuck Wendig and a whole bunch of non-fiction. And then allllll the books coming out in 2014. All of them.

unnamedRelease date: November 5th 2013

After a tragedy nearly ripped 21 year old Madeline Darlington-Gray’s life in half, she’s spent the past three years trying to put the pieces back together. But pieces never just fit back together, and when she’s betrayed by those she trusts, everything crumbles. Shoving everything she owns into the trunk of her car, Maddie drives south, trying to run from her past.
Eno, North Carolina seems like the perfect place to hide. Working at a local café is light years from Maddie’s Manhattan existence and for the first time in a while, she’s finding her family. There’s Grandma, the café owner; Samantha, the hairstylist next door with plans to make Maddie’s life unsuck and Noie, the three year old girl who’s stolen Maddie’s heart.
And then there’s Gabriel Mendez, Noie’s single dad. He’s intrigued Maddie since the first time she met him, and while he has his own secrets, he wants more from her than just friendship. But the past never stays past, and all too soon, Maddie realizes she can’t hide from hers. If she can’t put the pieces of her shattered life together this time, she’ll have no hope for a future.
A future she desperately wants.
