Luxe Bookclub Discussion:Character Discussion Five - Diana

I like this girl! She's a little rebellious, but with a good cause, yo know? She seems totally unimpressed by class and wealth, which is a characteristic I adore about her. I find her attraction to henry odd, considering this, but something tells me - even tho i'm not finished reading yet - that maybe, she's going to get her man. She just seems like that kind of girl.

She is the exact opposite to her sister, too, which is nice.

I kind of see her as an early example of feminism. What do we think?

I think they're going to make a great couple too.

I just hope Liz and Henry don't get married first.

Diana is my fave character in the whole novel - besides Will, maybe.

She's bold and brazen and totally not characterstic of the times she lives in. She's passionate, intelligent and not just a pretty face. I can totally understand why a robust man like Henry is attracted to her. I reckon they're going to make sweet, sweet love and have gorgeous, fiesty children.

I ADORED the greenhouse scene at the end. It was so innocent and so sweet. So new for both of them. I assume that Diana is a virgin and I love Henry for respecting her dignity like that.

*sigh*

Yep, thats what I thought too, though I was reading really fast (I couldn't read fast enough!!) so i just wanted to make sure I had the details clear.

She is a really dynamic character that brings a whole lot of colour to the novel.

I totally agree with you girls! I love Diana! She is like my favorite character! She needs and I'm sure she will get her man. :cheer: And I can see some early feminism in her as well, being unimpressed with the wealth and the riches of society. She just wants love, and she is gonna get it from Henry! Yay!

She hates the way that women are supposed to act in comparison to men. I love that about her. I love reading novels set in those times which showcase characters that challenge the norm. Thats why I love the Bronte sisters, they write characters into their novels which are overtly feminist, tho there really wasn't a term for it back then...

Gah. I need more victorian literature.

Well there are a lot of classic victorian novels around that are a little harder to navigate because of their language, but are equally as scandalous. Anything by the Bronte sisters, George Elliot, Charles [Censored]ens (though personally I cant stand good ole Charlie)

I reckon you should start with the Bronte sisters, Stephanie. Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte is a good solid read, and its not too long. A good way tog et started on the classics.

A little off topic, but this is a good resource if you're looking for more Victorian reads.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_literature

Happy hunting.

I dont think The Luxe qualifies as Victorian Literature, not by a long shot, but it certainly has that air about it.

i love diana's spunk and independence. i can't help but think that she's that way because Liz took all the responsibility when their dad died that she has time to do whatever she wants. So when she thinks stuff about hating liz or her being perfect, i get annoyed cause i think that she's being a bit selfish. also naive cause she can't see everything that liz has done for her and her family.

i love diana!
she's so true to herself and i love it.
she's not caught up in "high society" like elizabeth.
and while i do like elizabeth for finally following her heart, i was just SO IRRITATED with her for not doing so earlier on.

but back to Di. She's probably my favorite character in the book. besides henry. *swooon*

Does anyone else picture Diana looking like India Eisley from The Secret Life of an American Teenager?
