Tweak Discussion - Nic and Rehab

Nic goes into rehab so many times. It seems to be a common theme that people addicted to substances often relapse after stints in rehab.

Do you think the programs are flawed, or do you think the saying 'once a junkie always a junkie' is actually true?

I think part of the problem with rehabs is that most of them are for such a short period of time.

You listen to Nic talk about all these rehabs he's been into and some of them are one month to four months in length. I'm not saying that there are not good or lengthy rehabs out there, I'm just saying that nobody's going to get much better if they don't have a stable environment to live in for quite awhile.

I think that rehab doesn't work for a lot of people because you're in there with a whole bunch of other people who are connected with other people who do drugs.

Plus, I firmly believe that a lot of people who go to rehab - Nic included - don't actually want to get clean. They go because they're ordered to for court reasons or wahtever. As soon as they're out, they're going to go straight back to drugs.

You have to want to get clean....

Rehab only works if you want it to work... Its like Spencer said, you will always have to work at it... even if you been clean for 10 or 20 years. And I think part of Nic's problem was he felt that he detoxed and everything was ok and he didnt need to worry, but he was just kidding himself. Its like with anything, you need to be constint or you will relasp... You know take things day by day and dont try to fix everything right then. Rehab is like magic, its just a stepping stone, a really good one if you use it right....

and then some people are so messed up inside, have so little confidence, that even if they want rehab to work they're not strong enough within themselves to make it happen...

so sad.

I think that you have to want it to work for it to work. Like Nikki said, some people are sent there as part of court and they don't really care.

I also think it depends on the treatment. Like when Nic went to Arizona, they didn't just help him with his drug problem, but also with his self esteem issues and sex issues. I think that is how rehabs should be. The drugs problem is just covering up more deeper, serious problems. And like Nichole said, I think rehab should be for a few months. People need a stable enviornment to be able to fix their problems and thrive as successful people.
