This is the story of a boy who used to be a wolf and a girl who was becoming one.
Just a few months ago, it was Sam who was the mythical creature. His was the disease we couldn’t cure. His was the good-bye that meant the most. He had the body that was a mystery, too strange and wonderful and terrifying to comprehend.
But now it is spring. With the heat, the remaining wolves will soon be falling out of their wolf pelts and back into their human bodies. Sam stays Sam, and Cole stays Cole, and it’s only me who’s not firmly in my own skin.

Another Movie Announcement: Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
30 Sep 2009 Author: Nikki Filed In: NewsIn a recent interview yaReads conducted with author Maggie Stiefvater, it was uncovered that there were ‘talks’ of Shiver - her popular new werewolf novel – being made into a film. Well, it seems that these talks have actually eventuated into something concrete. Variety’s online magazine published an article confirming that yes, Shiver WILL be made into a film:
Unique Features has acquired screen rights to “Shiver,” a bestselling supernatural romance novel by Maggie Stiefvater that is the first of a three-book series.
Pic will be produced by Unique Features partners Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne.
Book covers a bittersweet paranormal romance between a teen who becomes a wolf each winter and his girlfriend, who helps him find the secret to staying human. The first installment was published by Scholastic Press in August and has been on the bestseller lists for six weeks. The sequel novel, “Linger,” will be published next August. Unique acquired all three books in the series.
Shaye and Lynne, who at New Line covered such fantasy and supernatural subject matter as “The Lord of the Rings” and “Blade,” sparked to the author’s voice, and said they couldn’t ignore the grip that otherworldly stories have on young viewers.
“I’m not the biggest werewolf or vampire fan, but the author has a strong take on a young adult sensibility,” Shaye said. “It’s also a sexy love story that isn’t too over the top.”
Shaye and Lynne used their discretionary fund to acquire the book in a competitive bidding situation. They will bring it first to Warner Bros., where they have a first-look deal, and will set a writer shortly.
Unique adds “Shiver” to a slate of pic projects that include an adaptation of the Paul McCartney children’s book “High in the Clouds,” a Barry Levinson-directed adaptation of the musical “City of Angels” and the Broadway-bound musicals “Elf” and “Secondhand Lions.”
So what do we think? Yay, or nay?

The Host: A Movie
29 Sep 2009 Author: Nikki Filed In: News
We understand that we’re a little slow on the uptake with this one, but Stephenie Meyer has announced that her only non-Twilight related book, The Host, is officially being made into a film.
From Stephenie Meyer’s website:
“I’m so excited to be working with Nick Weschler, and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz to bring The Host to a visual format. They’ve all been a dream to work with, so lovely and collaborative, and I feel like we’re in a really good place to make a great movie together. And then to have Andrew Niccol writing and directing? Truly awesome. If you’ve never seen Gattaca, go watch it now. One of my favorite movies of all time. It’s such a great example of character driven science fiction, which is ideal for The Host, no? I’m having an absolute blast imagining different dream casts, which I would post if people didn’t take my silly blogs so seriously these days. I’m looking forward to seeing the cast lists you come up with in the fansite forums, and if any of them match mine.”
So what do we think Meyer fans? Love it, or hate it?

Defining Twilight – Brian Leaf
12 Sep 2009 Author: Nikki Filed In: News
A book landed on my desk this week and although its not a fictional release, I thought some of you might be very interested in it. It’s called Defining Twilight and its essentially a vocab book aimed at aiding study for the SAT, ACT, GED and SSAT exams. It has a Twilight theme, something which a lot of you are pretty interested it. From what I can gather, I think the association with Twilight is suposed to make your studying a little less painful.
Will it? I really don’t know.
It has quizzes about words used in Twilight, comprehension tasks based on passages in Twilight, etc.
I admire the effort to encourage more kids to actually study, so if it works, then I say go for it. So I’m interested, would you use a book like this to help you study for the above exams?

Goth Girl is Now a Toy!
29 Aug 2009 Author: Nikki Filed In: NewsBarry Lyga’s character, Kyra Sellers (from The Astonishing Adventures of Fan Boy and Goth Girl) has been immortalised in a toy.
Taken from Lyga’s blog:
That’s Kyra in “Minimate” form. Minimates are cool little block-style action figures. They’re two inches of articulated plastic awesome.
Over the years, there have been Minimates for Spider-Man and the X-Men and Star Trek and Ghostbusters and Battlestar Galactica and lots more (you can learn more at minimates.com). Now Kyra joins their ranks as a very limited edition Minimate, thanks to the folks at Stupid Kat LLC and Diamond Select Toys, who decided that Kyra just had to exist in three dimensions. (And, you know, in plastic.)
- Nose stud? Check!
- Lip ring? Check!
- Reverse-smiley? Check!
- All-black outfit? Duh!
How do you get your hands on this toy? Well, you can’t buy it in stores. In fact, you can’t buy it — period. The Goth Girl Minimate will only be available as a giveaway from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and from me.
The first people to get the Minimate will be the entrants in the Goth Girl Trailer Contest. Everyone who makes a trailer will get a Goth Girl Minimate. But if you have neither the time nor the talent to put together a trailer, have no fear: there will be other ways to net yourself a Kyra of your very own.
For more information on the contest and the toy, click here
Please note, yaReads is not hosting this competition. Please do not leave a message at the end of this post asking to be entered.
New Moon Movie Soundtrack Announcements
29 Aug 2009 Author: Nikki Filed In: News
Stepheniemeyer.com has released information regarding the New Moon movie soundtrack.
The first single has officially been confirmed for the New Moon Soundtrack! Death Cab for Cutie has written an exclusive song for the movie entitled ‘Meet Me On the Equinox.’ Below is a statement from the band about the song:
“We are very excited to be a part of this amazing series of novels set in our own backyard. It just seemed a perfect synergy that a band from the Northwest would create a song for a series of novels set in the Northwest. We wrote ‘Meet Me On the Equinox’ to reflect the celestial themes and motifs that run throughout the Twilight series and we wanted to capture that desperate feeling of endings and beginnings that so strongly affect the main characters. This song marks the first attempt that Death Cab for Cutie has ever made at contributing new, unreleased material for a film and we are proud to be a part of the Twilight legacy.” — Nick Harmer / Death Cab for Cutie
The album cover is the same as the first promotional movie poster and will be in stores on October 20th, 2009.
