Alex Pettyfer or Bust? ** Updated

Reports are going around this morning (or evening depending on where you are) that Brit actor Alex Pettyfer has been offered the role of Jace Wayland in the upcoming adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series.

According to Vulture, the studio, Screen Gem has said negotiations could begin as early as this week. The only issue with this plan is that if Pettyfer doesn’t sign, the studio might not be willing to go ahead with the project at all.

With Pettyfer already starring in two YA adaptations – I Am Number Four and Beastly, would the actor be willing to take on another?

Author Cassandra Clare has been unable to comment at this time.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the idea of casting Pettyfer to begin with so if him not signing means the project gets scrapped I’ll be DEVASTATED. (*cough* I’m still all for Mitch Hewer for the part)

We’ll be waiting to see how this story unfolds, we’ll keep you posted!

**Update from Cassandra Clare’s blog

“I wanted to wait till I could have an official chat with the studio folks before I said anything, so my small contribution is: I know Alex has met with the director, Scott Stewart, several times; I know he screened Scott’s movie, Priest, and loved it; I know he read the TMI books over the holidays and really liked them and liked Jace, and his representatives are negotiating making a deal for the role of Jace. At this point it’s all about the deal, which really doesn’t have anything to do with me, so I stand back and wait for news like the rest of you.”

  • MMM! Yummy picture! :) I am crossing my fingers that he’ll say yes! He’s totally WANTED!

  • Wow talk about no pressure on Alex to say yes. 😛 I’ve never actually read the books (but I just got the first one from the Library!) but I still like him for the part. Mostly because he’s just so good looking it’s hard not to like him for any part. 😛

  • Wow, that’s crazy! I love the Mortal Instruments series, and for it to be hinging on just one actor is extremely scary. Plus, I’ve never actually seen any of Alex’s movies, but I have to say I can’t wait to see I Am Number Four. The commercials with him in it seem so good!!

  • @Julia – Hahahaha, I know right? No pressure. If you don’t sign for this movie, thousands of TMI fans will wanna gut you. No big.

You must read the series, it’s excellent!

  • He has to be Jace! No One else 😉

  • He’s very hot and all that, but he’s wanted by fans for so many YA books-turned-movie. Not just Mortal Instruments! I don’t really feel like seeing him in every YA-books-turned-movie even if he agrees to be in all of them. D:

  • I love Alex, I really do (and everyone on the forum knows how I love him as Jace) but is he getting too old to play Jace? That’s my only concern.

  • Even though Mr. Pettyfer is smokin’ I am getting a little sick of him doing all these book adaptations (don’t forget he was Alex Rider too.) I know these are smart career moves on his part and I don’t have anything against him, but I’m hoping he will branch out a little.

  • @Katie – that’s one of my issues too

  • Ugh i dont think they will really stop the film if he says no. This movie, whoever plays the roles is going to be a major blockbuster. These books where fantastic. I re-read them over and over. It’ll probably be bigger than twilight and Harry Potter. But I dont like Alex! I see him everywhere with the book situation. Its like one book movie after another.

  • I hate to break it but I don’t think Pettyfer is going to be cast, Sony is having an open casting call for Jace on this website:

  • GOOD

But as I saw Cassandra Clare tweet, just because they’re holding the auditions doesnt mean Alex has turned down the part. We’ll just have to see.

  • Although I can definitely see why so many people want Alex Pettyfer for the part, I think the whole thing demonstrates how small the pool is for actors in these types of movies. There are so many amazing actors out there, one of whom could be perfect for the part, but they get overlooked because the studios want big names.
Look at Twilight – Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson had been in a few movies before, but neither were really famous before those movies, and that turned out pretty well :)
If the story is good enough (and I agree, TMI has potential to be just as big as Twilight) it doesn’t matter if the actors are hugely famous or not.

P.S. I agree Christina, I reckon Mitch Hewer would be v. interesting in the part… :L
Also, another Skins cast member, Kaya Scodelario, is in the frame for Katniss in the Hunger Games adaptation – although I hated her character in Skins, I would be super happy if she got the part!

  • He’s perfect. A great actor too (i just seen i am # 4 an hour ago actually) I hope he says yes! i wanna see him act more & if he liks books turned into movies type of gigs then i dont care, how could any one get tired of his delicious face?

@Maggie, i don’t think alex is is that famous. he BARELY is getting fame when i am number 4 commercials started coming out & beastly besides that, people didn’t know his name, maybe his face (who wouldn’t? he is one sexy beast XD)

@katie & @christina dont worry, he just looks older in that pic (plus sexy) but when he shaves he can pass for a teen. (which he kinda is, he’s turning 21 this april. he just left teen-ville hehe)

I guess this means i have to read the series now, i have had the first book on my shelf for AGES now.
